Born in Newmarket in Q4-1897 [Newmarket 3b:507] to William Clarence and Florence Mildred MAISEY (née BUSH).
1901 census...Bertie [3] was at Fern Cottage, Ogbourne St George, near Marlborough, Wiltshire with his father Clarence [32] a wine & spirit agent, born Henley on Thames, his mother Florence [26] born Swindon, Wiltshire, and his brothers Frederick [5], Walter [4] Percival [2] all born in Newmarket and Francis [1] born in Swindon. 1911 census...Bertie [13] was still at the same place with his parents (father now a turf correspondent) and his siblings. New siblings were Florence Mildred [5]William Egbert [4], Harold Lionel [3] and Maud Evelyn [8 months] all born in Ogbourne St George. Brothers Frederick and Walter had were not home and one child is unaccounted for since 10 are recorded as born and living in 1911. His father Clarence, a turf correspondent, had been living in Newmarket several times and at different addresses (one being 13 Bath Terrace, Mill Hill). |

He was an NCO Observer in the Royal Flying Corps, and was re-classifed as a Sergeant Mechanic on the formation of the Royal Air Force, which was officially
formed just 24 days before his death No.11 Squadron claims to be the first ever dedicated fighter squadron in the world, initially with Vickers Gunbuses. They were in action over the Somme in 1918 with Bristol Fighters |
